A well-designed barrel harness is the difference between a loaded portage you can manage and one that grinds you down, and this one was built by people who know the difference firsthand.

The RBW Expedition Barrel Harness is the result of a design collaboration between Recreational Barrel Works and Ostrom Outdoors, two names with serious portage trail credentials between them. It fits both 60L and 30L barrels and is sized to accommodate most body types, with generous padding across the shoulder straps, hip belt, and back pad that sits between you and the hard side of the barrel. The shoulder strap tension adjustment runs long and hi-vis so you can reach it and dial in the fit while wearing the harness, which is a practical detail that shorter straps simply don't allow. Switching the harness between a 60L and 30L barrel is straightforward when your kit changes trip to trip.

A webbing strap across the top of the barrel keeps the lid secure during the carry and doubles as a convenient spot to lash a PFD or extra layer without stuffing it into the barrel. Four grab loops make the loaded barrel manageable to lift and position in the canoe. A strap under the barrel handles square loads and straight-sided containers as well. The optional RBW tumpline is compatible for paddlers who want to add that traditional carry option.
